Friday! Another week survived. Nate hadn't bothered me today. I hadn't even gotten to see him. I ignored the little part of me that was disappointed about that. It was good that he left me alone. I certainly didn't want anything like what happened in the music room to happen again.

Liar, whispered a small voice, but I pushed it aside and focused on the task in front of me. I had found my mom's recipe book and was now trying to make her famous apple pie. It was Dad's favorite pie. I wanted to surprise him with it. Dad was in a school board meeting. He would be home late. I'd saved him a plate from the casserole, I'd cooked and it was waiting in the microwave for Dad to come home. But for dessert, I wanted to serve him warm apple pie with whipped cream. I put the last slice of apple on the dough and sprinkled some more sugar and cinnamon on top. Then I put the pan into the preheated oven. It should be ready in half an hour. Now all I had to do was whip the cream. I looked at the clock. If the meeting didn't go longer than planned, Dad had to get home in a quarter of an hour. After I put the whipped cream in the refrigerator so it wouldn't fall back together, I looked into the oven. The cake already smelled heavenly. I was about to grab a Pepsi from the fridge when I heard the front door open.

"What smells so good in here?" came my dad's voice from the hallway.

"Pie!"

"What kind?"

"Your favorite."

Dad entered the kitchen and kissed me on the cheek before marching briskly to the oven and peering inside.

"Hmmm. Is that Mom's recipe?"

"Yes. I found her old recipe book."

"Hmmm. I can't remember the last time I had Mom's famous apple pie," Dad said, kissing me on the cheek again. "Thank you, angel."

"Wash your hands and sit down," I said. "I'll just warm up your food."

Dad did as instructed and I turned on the microwave. After the food was warmed up, I set the plate in front of Dad and sat across from him as he began to eat.

"How was the meeting?", I wanted to know.

Dad looked at me and rolled his eyes.

"A bunch of snobs with more money than sense," he said scornfully. "Why does it have to be that at every school the ones with the most money are on the board? These snobs think everything goes their way just because they have influence and money. And of course their offspring can do no wrong."

"Dad!" said I, rolling my eyes. "You didn't bring up the subject of the KINGS, did you?"

"Of course I did," Dad said grimly. "Those little rug rats think they can do whatever they want at my school."

"Dad! Don't fight the KINGS. It would be easier for me if you didn't turn them against you."

Dad frowned.

"Are they still on your case?" he wanted to know.

"They've let up a little.
